Onyeka Nwelue is set to Speak at the Drew University Transatlantic Connections Conference in Ireland

Onyeka Nwelue is set to Speak at the Drew University Transatlantic Connections Conference in Ireland themed “Kindred Spirits / Dáimh”

AMAA nominee and award-winning writer, Onyeka Nwelue whose latest offering, The Beginning of Everything Colourful, a novel written in Spanglish and set in Mexico, the United States, Japan, India and Israel, has just been republished in Nigeria by Paressia Publishers, is set to speak at the fifth annual Drew University Transatlantic Connections Conference in Ireland. The theme of this year’s Transatlantic Connections Conference is “Kindred Spirits / Dáimh”. On Friday, January 12th, 2018, Nwelue will speak on the topic:Storytelling as an African Technique of Conflict Resolution.” 

Born in 1988 and raised in Nigeria, Nwelue is a trained filmmaker, TV show host and professor. His works have appeared in the Guardian, BBC, MTV and his documentary film, The House of Nwapa, was nominated in the Best Documentary Award category of the 2017 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and has screened at over 12 film festivals globally.

His first novel, The Abyssinian Boy was published when he was 21 and won the TM Aluko Prize for Fiction and the Ibrahim Tahir Prize for First Book.

He is currently a Research Fellow at Center for International Studies at Ohio University.

The Transatlantic Connections Conference, organised by The Irish Studies Program at Drew University, in association with the Institute of Study Abroad Ireland, is an opportunity to explore cultures and the interactions and intersections between them. The focus of the conference will be on cultures that are “outside the mainstream,” and the goal is to foster a sense of shared kinship and celebration amongst representatives of humanity’s cultural diversity.
